Get Rid of Cigarette Smoke Odors
How can you safely rid your home of tobacco odors without adding to the problem by using harsh cleansers? We have several handy tips below.
Removing Cigarette Smoke Odors from Rooms: If you’ve just moved in to a home used by smokers, or if you had smoking guests at a party, you’ll want to clear the air. Unfortunately, smoke particles are very persistent, and conventional air fresheners usually just mask the problem. Stubborn smells will vanish like, ahem, smoke, if you follow one of these strategies:
- If you have smokers in the house, help prevent the problem in the first place by filling ashtrays with cat litter to extinguish cigarettes and capture the foul odor.
Don't underestimate the power of fresh air. Open up your windows, and let the breeze act as a powerful odor eliminator.
- Set small bowls of vinegar, pine-scented cleaner or activated charcoal around the room (this also works in a car). If your home has young children or pets, place the bowls well out of reach. Close off the room overnight. The vinegar absorbs the smoke and acts as a household odor removal.
- Sprinkle baking soda liberally on carpets, rugs and upholstery around the room. Let it sit overnight. Vacuum, and smell the smoke odors disappear.
- Soak a rag or a dish towel in vinegar, wring out the excess and wave it around the room for a minute or two, soaking up the smoky, musty odor.
- Odors get trapped in many soft furnishings, so cleaning shades, curtains, cushions, and fixtures helps to eliminate smoke odors.
- Spray your favorite perfume or cologne on a cold light bulb. When the light is turned on, the warmed scent will fill the room and freshen up the odor in your home. Note: only do this to a COLD light bulb, or else the bulb may explode!
- If you’re willing to do some heavy-duty work, shampooing carpet really helps with smoky odor elimination.
